Tutoring & Mentoring

The City of Hyattsville offers onsite tutoring and mentoring services through Northstar Tutoring for local students in grades K-12 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, from 6:30 - 8 p.m. at the Driskell Park Recreation Center, 3911 Hamilton Street.

Registered students are matched with a volunteer tutor-mentor who works with the student for the full academic year, and often for several subsequent years.  When a student starts the program, Northstar speaks with the student, parents and teachers to pinpoint areas of academic strengths and weakness to help address their particular needs.

During the sessions, students work with their volunteers to complete their homework and study for upcoming tests and quizzes.  Students are also provided with supplemental educational materials based on their individual math and reading needs for days when they do not have homework.

Tutoring will resume for the 2023-2024 school year on October 2.

Volunteer as a tutor/mentor!

Support Hyattsville's next generation! Volunteers are matched with their own student, who they work with for the duration of the school year - and subsequent years if both continue with the program.

In addition to meeting for weekly sessions, volunteers have the option of taking their student on monthly mentoring activities.  Mentoring activities are arranged by the volunteer and student’s parent and can range from trips to museums and sports events to going to the movies or extra tutoring sessions.
