The Office of Volunteer Services extends our great thanks and sincere appreciation to the volunteer groups that restored and continue to maintain the Trumbule Trail in Magruder Park!
The Trumbule Trail is part of the Anacostia Watershed and located in the Critical Care Area of the Chesapeake Bay. Restoration of the 600-foot, "U-shaped" boardwalk began with volunteers carrying over 100 utility poles into a natural swamp. The poles served as the base for an additional 400 feet of trail, making the trail a continuous loop. Volunteers also made the boardwalk more accessible, and added a new gravel path, a fiberglass foot-bridge and two observation decks. Since then, hundreds of hours have gone into continued maintenance of the area, including large scale volunteer efforts to remove non-native invasive plants. This service has led to the repopulation of native plants and the creation of a host environment for threatened species.
