Volunteer Services & Opportunities

Volunteers Pic
Residents and non-residents of all ages and abilities are invited to volunteer in our community. The Office of Volunteer Services ensures that each service project is meaningful and safe, tracks service hours, and can provide documentation and letters of recommendation as needed. The City of Hyattsville also hosts an annual reception to thank Volunteers and give awards for outstanding service.

The Office of Volunteer Services can match you with a variety of opportunities throughout the City. Check out the ongoing volunteer opportunities listed below and contact our Community Services Manager to learn more.

On-Going Volunteer Opportunities

Community Cleanups

Volunteer Services regularly coordinates and supports community cleanups. If your group would like to host a cleanup please contact us. The City will provide cotton work gloves, safety guidelines, litter sticks and 80% post consumer recycled plastic bags.

Eagle Scout & Other Leadership Projects

We receive many requests for Eagle Scout and other leadership projects throughout the year. Here are our guidelines, which should be especially helpful on the Trail to Eagle Scout.  Much of this information can also be applied to other leadership projects and awards such as the GSA Gold Award.

Event Volunteering

Event volunteers lead or assist with public programs sponsored by the City of Hyattsville. Event volunteering is an opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people while providing a public service. Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older. They may be tasked with event set-up and clean-up; staffing information booths, games & contests; information distribution, and having fun!

Non-Native Invasive Plant Removals

On the third Saturday of every month, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Volunteers can learn how to identify and properly remove non-native, invasive plants from Magruder Woods. A set of Safety Guidelines and cotton work gloves will be provided. Volunteers should dress for the elements, with sturdy boots or shoes, long sleeves and long pants. Don’t forget water and sunscreen. Warning: You will get dirty and have fun, too!
